Planned road works in the North West– summary for Monday 7 to Sunday 13 November 2016

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 4 November and could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible. M6 junctions 16 to 19: Cheshire smart motorway
Work is underway for the smart motorway upgrade with some overnight closures in place. More details are available at http://roads.highways.gov.uk/project...smart-motorway.
Monday 7 November, 10pm to 6am, a full closure will be in place northbound between junctions 18 (Holmes Chapel) and 19 (Knutsford).
Tuesday 8 November, 10pm to 6am, a full closure will be in place southbound between junctions 19 (Knutsford) and 18 (Holmes Chapel)
M6 junction 22 bridge maintenance

Essential bridge maintenance started in October to replace 40 corroded bearings on the M6 junction 22 bridges. The work, between junctions 21a and 23, is likely to last for 6 months. It will be carried out in a number of phases, largely during daytime hours, Monday to Friday, between 7.30am and 5pm, with some work taking place outside these times. Average speed cameras and a 50mph speed limit are in place through the roadworks.

M6 junction 34 Lancaster

Lancashire County Council’s new link road between junction 34 of the M6 and Heysham has now opened but finishing work will require lane and hard shoulder closures along the M6 through junction 34 to continue for the time being. M53 between junctions 4 and 5 (bridge joints)

Work began in September for approximately 4 months to renew road markings and bridge joints. This will be carried out in a number of phases between 8pm and 5am (7am during weekends) Monday to Saturday with lane closures. Some overnight closures will also be required with signed diversions.

M53 between junctions 4 and 5 (resurfacing)

Work began on Saturday 8 October to resurface both carriageways in a 5 week project. It involves daytime lane closures and overnight full carriageway closures. Total closures of the northbound carriageway between junction 5 and junction 4 will be taking place between 9pm and 7am on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 November.

M55 Resurfacing

Work is due to start on Monday 7 November to carry out carriageway patching works on the M55 at three separate locations;

on the eastbound carriageway between junctions 4 and 3,
on the eastbound carriageway in the vicinity of junction 3 (including the eastbound entry slip road) and;
on the westbound carriageway between junctions 1 and 3.
The works are programmed to take place overnight (from 8pm to 6am the following morning) during November 2016, starting on the evening of Monday 7 November for approx. 11 days.

Traffic Management will consist of carriageway lane closures, road closures, and a temporary mandatory 50mph speed limit, all of which are being put in place for the safety of both the work force and the travelling public.

Traffic management (to be in place from 8pm) will vary each evening as follows;

Monday 7 – Eastbound carriageway lane closures between junctions 4 and 3 together with the closure of the M55 junction 3 eastbound exit slip road.
Tuesday 8 – Eastbound carriageway lane closures between junctions 4 and 3 together with the closure of the M55 junction 3 eastbound exit and entry slip roads.
Wednesday 9 – Closure of the eastbound M55 between junctions 4 and 3.
Thursday 10 – Closure of the eastbound M55 between junctions 3 and 1.
Friday 11 – Eastbound carriageway lane closures in the vicinity of junction 3 together with the closure of the M55 junction 3 eastbound entry slip road.
Monday 14 – Westbound carriageway lane closures between junctions 1 and 3.
Tuesday 15 – Westbound carriageway lane closures between junctions 1 and 3.
Wednesday 16 – A northbound lane closure on the northbound M6 approaching junction 32, together with the closure of the westbound M55 between junctions 1 and 3 and the link road from the southbound M6 to the westbound M55.
M56 Weaver Viaduct repairs and resurfacing

Work started in August on a £1.5 million project to repair and resurface Weaver Viaduct which helps carry the M56 between junctions 12 and 14. The work involves overnight lane and hard shoulder closures. Work will be completed by the beginning of November.

M60 junction 8 Sale to junction 20 Rochdale
A major smart motorway scheme is taking place to cut congestion and improve journey times on parts of the M60 and the M62 in Greater Manchester. The scheme involves overnight slip road and carriageway closures with a 50mph limit in place for the safety of workers and drivers. A significant programme of temporary night closures has been programmed to fit gantries with wiring and signs. The project is due to be completed in autumn 2017.

M602 Clarendon Bridge
Work to refurbish this footbridge over the M602 near Eccles started in August and is expected to take around 12 weeks. The footbridge will be closed throughout the project, with a signed pedestrian diversion in place. There will also be occasional overnight M602 carriageway closures between 9am and 5am, with short diversions in place.

A56 Rising Bridge roundabout
Work is taking place to improve safety and reduce delays at Rising Bridge Roundabout near Haslingden, requiring some lane closures and overnight road closures. The new traffic lights are due to come into operation by the end of November, with resurfacing work planned for December.
A66 Bassenthwaite Lake

A new phase of the flood resilience works will start on Monday 7 November, which will allow the full overnight carriageway closures to be removed and replaced by 24/7 traffic control. This phase involves resurfacing works at Embleton road end and as a result the B5291 at Dubwath junction will be closed between 8pm to 6am meaning access on and off the A66 will be unavailable. Diversion for local traffic will be signed from the A66 at Lambfoot junction to pass through to Embleton.

Resurfacing work will also be carried out at the Pheasant Inn junction under 24/7 traffic control, although access to the hotel will be available at all times. The works at Smithy Cottage, adjacent to Bassenthwaite Lake will continue under contraflow.

A556 Knutsford to Bowdon
A £192 million project is being delivered to build a new dual carriageway linking the M56 to the M6 in Cheshire. From Monday 10 October a new phase of work started at the southern, Knutsford, end of the project around the roundabout at junction 19 of the M6. The existing or forthcoming closures include:
Total, 9pm to 5am, overnight closures of the roundabout at junction 19 of the M6 nightly (excluding Saturday and Sunday nights) until 23 December drivers on the northbound M6 will be able to leave at junction 19 but only to access the southbound A556 (for Northwich). This includes A556 between Mere junction and junction 19.
Closures of the M56 junction 7 eastbound entry slip road between 9pm and 5am until Friday 11 November (excluding Saturdays and Sundays)
The exit slip road from the eastbound M56 at junction 7 remains closed for work to provide new link roads and a new roundabout at Bowdon
Closure of Chapel Lane for bridge alignment works into January for bridge and road alignment work
A556 northbound- closed northbound only from Bucklow Hill to Bowdon (diversion will be from Mere) overnight (9pm to 5am) on Wednesday 9th , Thursday 10th and Friday 11th November.

A590 Ulverston
Drainage repairs between Dalton and Queen Street will continue until Saturday 26 November with 8pm to 6am and 9.30am to 3.30pm working. Narrow lanes or temporary traffic lights will be used.

A663 Broadway
Around 3.5 miles of the route are being resurfaced between the A627(M) at Holden Fold and Moston Lane East, south of junction 21, M60. All work will be carried out in sections under night closures. From 7 November until Christmas, work will take place between 8pm and 5am from Monday to Wednesday, between midnight and 5am on Thursdays and Fridays to accommodate Christmas shoppers, and between 8pm and 7am on Saturdays and Sundays. Signed diversions will be in place. The project is due to be completed by the end of January.

A665 Bury Old Road
A scheme to upgrade the safety barriers on the A665 bridge over the M60 is due to start on Monday 7 November.
The work will be carried out between 8.30am and 11pm, Monday to Friday, with temporary traffic lights and lane closures in place from 6.30pm. Some overnight and weekend working may also be required.
The Kenilworth Avenue junction with Bury Old Road will also be closed throughout the scheme, with a diversion in place. The project is due to be completed by February
