Planned road works in the North West

– summary for Monday 18 July to Sunday 24 July 2016

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 15 July, and could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

M6 junctions 16 to 19: Cheshire smart motorway

Work is underway for the smart motorway upgrade – typically with 1 or 2 lanes closed overnight between junctions in both directions and/or mobile lane closures along short sections of carriageway. As part of these works the southbound carriageway will be closed between junction 18 (Holmes Chapel) and junction 17 (Sandbach) - between 10pm and 5am each night - on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights (18, 19, 20 and 21 July). Signed diversions will be in place. More information about the project is available on the project website: http://www.highways.gov.uk/roads/roa...mart-motorway/

M6 junction 34 Lancaster

Lancashire County Council work off the motorway on the Heysham Link project requires a lane 1 and hard shoulder closure in both directions on the motorway around junction 34. The northbound entry slip road will be closed for 10 days from 8pm on Friday (22 July) as work to complete a brand new entry slip road is delivered. On Friday and Saturday nights (22 and 23 July) the southbound exit slip road will also be closed between 8pm and 6am. More information is available here: http://heyshamlink.lancashire.gov.uk

M6 junctions 36 to 35 Burton

Work is underway on the southbound carriageway for surfacing, drainage and barrier renewal works. There will be 24hr closure of lane 1 with closures of lanes 1 and 2 taking place overnight and a 50mph speed limit in place at all times. This work is due to be completed in early August.

M6 junction 44 to 43 (Carlisle)

Overnight – 8pm to 6am - work until Thursday (21 July) involves resurfacing lane 1 of the southbound carriageway around junction 44 and also carrying out drainage repairs with hard shoulder, lane 1 and lane 2 closures. Lane 1 will continue to be closed during the day and a 50mph speed limit will also operate around the clock past the short section of road works. The southbound entry slip road at J44 will also be closed between 8pm and 6am on the nights of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (18, 19 and 20 July) with diversions via junction 45.

M60 junction 8 Sale to junction 20 Rochdale

A major scheme is taking place to cut congestion and improve journey times on parts of the M60 and the M62 in Greater Manchester. The scheme involves overnight slip road and carriageway closures with a 50mph limit in place for the safety of workers and drivers. A significant programme of temporary night closures has been programmed to fit gantries with wiring and signs, which will take the project to May 2017. These are detailed on the journey impact tab of the project page and updated weekly, subject to weather conditions. See the project page for details: http://www.highways.gov.uk/roads/roa...62-junction-20

The project is due to be completed in autumn 2017.

M60 junction 22 to junction 24

Night closures on the clockwise carriageway, Monday to Friday from 20 June - 9pm to 5am (7am Saturday mornings) - for 7 weeks, for resurfacing. Signed diversions.

A556 Knutsford to Bowdon

A £192 million project is being carried out to create a new dual carriageway linking the M56 to the M6 in Cheshire. The exit slip road from the M56 at junction 7 is now closed for up to 4 months for work to provide new link roads and a new roundabout at the junction is completed. A temporary 40mph speed limit is currently in place between Bucklow Hill and Bowdon, and the new dual carriageway is expected to open in spring 2017. More information is available on the project website: http://www.highways.gov.uk/roads/roa...on-Improvement

A56 Rising Bridge roundabout

Work has started to improve safety and reduce delays at Rising Bridge Roundabout near Haslingden. Work will be carried out daily between 8pm and 6am, and will involve single closures on A56 and Rising Bridge roundabout. Some full carriageway closures will be needed, during which times fully signed diversion routes will be in place. Works are scheduled for completion at the end of July.

A590 Greenodd

Lane 1 of the eastbound carriageway just west of Greenodd roundabout is currently closed until further notice while we undertake a survey of the embankment.

A590 Lindal-in-Furness

A first phase of drainage installation works to alleviate flooding has now been completed and all traffic management has been removed. Further work with temporary traffic lights later this summer will be needed to finish this project.

A595 Parton

Overnight resurfacing will be taking place between Parton and Pelican Garage from Thursday (21 July) for around 7 nights – between 8pm and 6am each night when temporary traffic lights and a 40mph speed limit will be in place. Where required side roads – one at a time only – will be closed with signed diversions in place.

A66 Brougham to Center Parcs

Resurfacing works began on 13 June to run until the end of August. The timing of use of temporary traffic signals has now changed. Lights will be in place overnight on Mondays and Fridays and all day on weekends until 7pm on Sundays. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, lights will be in operation around the clock apart from between 6am and 9am each morning when they will be removed. A temporary mandatory 40mph speed limit will be in place for the duration of the works, with this being reduced overnight when a 10mph convoy system will be used.

A66 West of Scales to Mungrisedale junction

Resurfacing works started on 27 June and will run until Friday (22 July). Temporary traffic signals will be in place overnight with motorists being escorted through the works using a convoy system. A temporary mandatory 40mph speed limit will be in place for the duration of the works, with this being reduced to 10mph when the convoy system is used.

A66 Embleton

Work to reduce flood risk on a mile stretch of the A66 at Embleton began in January and is expected to be completed by the end of July. Temporary traffic lights operate 24 hours a day for the safety of crews and drivers. Full road closures in both directions will also be required on some nights between 8pm and 6am, and at some weekends. When the road is closed, diversions for HGVs and other vehicles will be clearly signed. Drivers are advised to use the A591 and the A595. This route is not suitable for HGVs which should use the M6 and A595.
